Email Etiquette

This eLearning Interaction outlines the essentials of email etiquette as well as reviewing the specific parts of a professional email. The overall goal of the learning experience is to improve efficiency and implement quality communication.

Many students and employees struggle with the necessary components of a professional email. In a local high school of over 2,000 students a common complaint from teachers was that students did not understand how to send an email or write a polite and professional communication.

Teachers were surveyed with behavioral and academic tasks that students were struggling with and I identified that email etiquette was a needed training. With a committee, I confirmed the need and decided to create a module-based eLearning for students to easily access through their current LMS.

This particular school requested that I develop short and interactive learning modules that students could complete individually during their advisory period. Since the school already had a Learning Management System in place, importing the Rise course as a SCORM file made it cost effective and easily accessible.


I designed this eLearning course by applying a combination of my own subject matter knowledge and using outside sources. My background as a former English teacher helped me be the SME on this project. I used Articulate Rise 360 to develop this eLearning experience.

Visual Storyboard

My first step was to create a storyboard for this project while referencing the common mistakes staff noticed to create a performance improving project.

Using the needs analysis, I realized that the modules needed to cover the purpose (or why) behind the training, the parts of a good email, and common mistakes to avoid. The visual storyboard includes a breakdown of these components for the eLearning course. By compiling the features, visuals, and text into one document, I was able to streamline the development process.

Interactive Prototype

The next step was to develop an interactive prototype with Articulate Rise 360. This prototype consisted of only part of the course; however, I also included many of the interactive Rise blocks so that feedback could be given on design.

With feedback from the client and other SMEs, I was able to create intuitive interactions and learner-friendly designs that met the needs of the client.

Full Development

After receiving feedback on the prototype, I proceeded to finish developing the full product. I was able to quickly fill out the rest of the course and create quiz questions that help track a learner’s comprehension of the course material. The data from the questions can then be tracked through the learning management system.

Results and Takeaways

Upon completion of my project, the end-product was shared school-wide. The project was well received and is scheduled to be implemented during the next advisory open lesson. I predict that this lesson will be re-used for upcoming students as well. I did suggest that teachers add to the eLearning with a discussion board post in which students would need to practice writing an email that implements the tools they learned in the course.

If I were to redesign this course, I would add email samples and scenario-based questions. An open-ended practice email would also be beneficial.

Through this project, I was able to dive into the features of Articulate Rise 360 and I feel confident that I can design superior products moving forward. This training should be helpful for years to come. It also was designed broadly enough to be used for other organizations seeking to educate their employees or students about email etiquette.
